Ubud… the heart and soul of Bali. A mystical and spiritual city, surrounded by picturesque rice terraces and filled with temples. It’s closer to many attractions than the coastal towns, so it’s also a great base from which to explore the rest of Bali. Culinarily, it is a real paradise for lovers of vegan and vegetarian cuisine, the number of healthy options is impressive. Be sure to also try Rijsttafel, which literally means “rice table” in Dutch. It is a traditional Indonesian meal consisting of a wide range of small, aromatic dishes served with rice. With this unique culinary experience, the Dutch colonizers wanted to present the richness and diversity of the culinary traditions of the Indonesian archipelago. Visit coffee plantations and try the most expensive coffee in the world – Kopi Luwak. Its high price is mainly due to the unique and labor-intensive production process. Kopi Luwak is made from coffee beans that have been eaten and excreted by a civet, a small mammal. The civet eats the ripest coffee cherries that pass through its digestive system. The beans are then collected from the civet’s droppings, cleaned, fermented, dried, roasted and ground to make coffee. Some coffee lovers believe that the fermentation process in the civet’s digestive system produces coffee with a milder and less acidic taste.
