  • USA Road Trip – San Francisco to New Orleans -Week I

“If I’m an advocate for anything, it’s to move. As far as you can, as much as you can. Across the ocean, or simply across the river. The extent to which you can walk in someone else’s shoes or at least eat their food, it’s a plus for everybody. Open your mind, get up off the couch, move.”

    Anthony Bourdain

From San Francisco (CA) to Hollywood (CA)

There’s a unique thrill every time you set foot in the States, a mix of excitement and anticipation for great food and unforgettable experiences. This time, the allure of Californian dreaming led us to embark on a picturesque road trip along the iconic Pacific Coast Highway from San Francisco to Hollywood, capturing the essence of the Golden State along the way.

Our journey wasn’t just about ticking off iconic sights—although, of course, we had to see the most interesting ones. It was also about diving deep into the local food scene, experiencing everything from classic fast foods and charming diners to celebrated restaurants offering local specialties.

We carefully designed an itinerary that balances the must-see landmarks with culinary adventures, ensuring we get to know each place through its unique flavours. To keep our budget in check, we opted for motels—affordable and conveniently located, making them perfect pit stops after a day of exploration.

The road trip is pretty intense, with long drives and packed days, leaving little downtime but maximising experiences. So, buckle up and join us as we eat our way through the first leg of our USA foodies road trip, savouring every moment and every bite from San Francisco to Hollywood.

Day 1 – Arrive to San Francisco

After landing and picking up our car at the airport, we headed straight to our motel. After a quick freshen-up, we made our way to the iconic Tadich Grill for lunch to celebrate our arrival. Established in 1849, Tadich Grill is the oldest continuously running restaurant in California, known for its classic American fare and seafood. Opt for a seat at the bar, chat with other diners, order a cocktail and toast to your adventure.

    Tadich Grill

Begin your meal with famous clam chowder, a rich and creamy soup loaded with tender clams and potatoes. Next, try the cioppino, a hearty Italian-American fish stew originating from San Francisco. Packed with fresh fish, shrimp, mussels, scallops and crab in a savoury tomato broth, it’s a seafood lover’s dream. Don’t miss the omelette with bacon and oysters – a unique combination with a storied past. Known as the Hangtown Fry, this dish originated during the Gold Rush era. Legend has it that a miner who struck it rich wanted the most expensive meal available, and the ingredients for the omelette – eggs, bacon, and oysters – were among the priciest at the time, requiring extensive transport and storage efforts. Another version tells of a condemned prisoner who requested this dish as his last meal, knowing the time it took to gather the ingredients would delay his execution.

    Pier 23

Spend the afternoon wandering around and exploring the city. Take it easy – you’ll probably be pretty jet-lagged. Have a drink at the iconic Pier 23.

Next, hop on a few trams and explore the city. For lunch, grab a burger at In-N-Out or Super Duper. In-N-Out doesn’t have a veggie burger, but their grilled cheese from the secret menu is my weakness. Whatever burger you choose, make sure to order it “animal style” – it’s a game-changer.

    Musso & Frank Grill

For dinner, make a reservation at Musso & Frank Grill, one of Hollywood’s oldest and most beloved restaurants. There’s something timeless about this place, from the red leather booths to the classic martinis served just the way they were in the early 1900s. After reading that celery with blue cheese was Frank Sinatra’s favourite appetizer, I ordered it and was thrilled to discover that I share a taste with legend himself, whose music I adore. The scallops here are also among my top dishes, perfectly seared with delicious buttery sauce.

    Saddle Ranch Chop House

End your evening at Saddle Ranch Chop House, known for its lively atmosphere and mechanical bull. It’s the perfect place to let loose and enjoy some late-night fun.

    Egg Slut

Well, if you followed our lead, you probably woke up with a bit of a hangover. Head over to Eggslut for some morning cure. The Fairfax sandwich is arguably the best egg sandwich out there – fluffy scrambled eggs, chives, cheddar cheese, caramelized onions, and sriracha mayo all nestled in a warm brioche bun. It’s the perfect way to start your day.

    Universal Studios

Once you’re fueled up, make your way to Universal Studios. It’s insane seeing movie locations and sets from your favorite films and discovering the magic behind movie-making. The real highlight is the Harry Potter section – it’s like stepping into the world of Hogwarts. The ride there is next level; make sure to head there first thing before the queue builds up. We even managed to ride twice – so worth it.

For dinner, head to Kogi for their famous tacos or The Boiling Crab for some messy seafood. If you’re like us, and have constant food FOMO, you will probably visit both. Kogi’s tacos are legendary, combining Korean BBQ with Mexican street food, while The Boiling Crab offers a hands-on dining experience with its deliciously seasoned seafood boils.
